Download Rupee Symbol for MS Word : Installation Guide

Fret no more about downloading the rupee symbol on to your computer. The symbol may take a while to appear on the keyboard but can right away be typed as a character, thanks to a newly-created font.

Mangalore-based Foradian Technologies Pvt Ltd has created a font called Rupee_Foradian. It can be downloaded from the company’s blogsite — http://blog.foradian.com — and used for free.

The company's CEO Unni Koroth told TOI that it was "something of an amusement to us in this era of technological advancement" that the government of India said it would take more than a year for the symbol to become commercially available. "We thought of doing something about it," he said. The company created a vector image of the new rupee sign and mapped the 'grave accent' symbol — the key just above the tab button on the keyboard — with it. This keystroke was chosen because most users and programmers don't use it.|

Within the hour, the trial version of the font was downloaded 1,100 times. When downloads crossed the 5,000 mark, the company worked on the full version, which it has also made available for free on the site. Many users of social networking sites have started using it, as have hundreds of bloggers. Version 2.0 of the font was released within 24 hours of the announcement of the rupee symbol.

It’s not so long away we find Indians using this money format just like what the Americans and Europeans do. Indian Government okayed the new Rupee symbol for Indian currency. Previously there is no global sign for Indian currency. It either used be displayed as INR at the end of the denomination amount or Rs. at the start of the currency.

How to install Rupee symbol font

• Download the rupee font symbol from above link
• Go to Windows --> Start --> Control Panel --> fonts
• Copy and paste the download rupee symbol font to the fonts folder
• Open your MS word and click insert symbol
• Browse for “Rupee Foradian” and you will find this rupee symbol.

Limitations of Rupee symbol font

It works only on computers where this font is installed. I can’t display this symbol in text form in any my website’s page or anywhere. Even the MS Word default grammar and spelling check is considering this symbol as ‘error’.

It takes some time to get this symbol universalized. Nevertheless, good work by Foradian team for developing the Rupee font symbol for Indians.

How to type Indian Rupee Symbol using your keyboard

Indian Rupee symbol has been announced and has been sent to the government for approval. And if you are wondering how will you type the rupee symbol using your keyboard, well it might take a year or so to get the symbol in action (to gain acceptance in India) and two years for international acceptance.

Technically speaking, the symbol will be first sent to Unicode Consortium’s technical committee, in order to include the same in Unicode database.

The symbol will also be included in the Indian Standards, viz. 13194:1991 – Indian Script Code for Information Interchange (ISCII), through an amendment to the existing list by the Bureau of Indian Standards. The ISCII specifies various codes for Indian languages for processing on computers along with the key-board lay outs.

While the Government of India can mandate hardware manufacturers to include the symbol in keyboards, it can also be accessed through assigned keyboard combination or via the operating system’s Character Map, post approval from the Unicode Consortium .

Here are a possible options you can play with

i.e., U+0052 (Latin letter R), and

Maybe, to get the official Rupee symbol, you would have to wait for the new keyboards or hack from a typographer.
